El Guapo Gets Top Tempranillo Recognition

At a recent blind tasting conducted by drinks editor at Texas Monthly, Jennifer Dupuy,  our El Guapo was named one of the Top Five Texas Tempranillos.  A blend of all Spanish wines, El Guapo consists of Tempranillo, Graciano (another pioneering effort at Alamosa) and Garnacha. Predominantly Tempranillo, this blend is typically old world but with the Texas terroir.

In 1998 we planted our first Tempranillo and at the end of the second season, we harvested a small crop.  This would be the first Tempranillo released commerciEl Guapoally in Texas, the 1999 El Guapo.  A few contemporaries were experimenting with small plantings and soon there were a couple of other good examples of Te  Soon, the demand for this fabulous red was pushing the large growers in the High Plains to commit some serious acreage to the grape. In 2014, most observers would give Tempranillo the edge in becoming The Texas Red.
